Climate change and nutrient enrichment altering sedimentary diatom assemblages since pre-industrial time: evidence from Canada’s most populated ecozone

چکیده

Lakes worldwide are under threat by a myriad of environmental stressors that have been increasing in number and magnitude. These can be regional such as climate change, or local nutrient-rich runoff, invasive species, road salt contamination, to name but few. To protect lake ecosystems from further deterioration, we need long-term data define pre-disturbance baselines identify causing the greatest ecological changes. Paleolimnology is an effective approach reconstruct limnological history, providing important window into past Here, applied paleolimnological tools explore pre-industrial contemporary diatom assemblage changes 27 lakes located most populated ecozone Canada, Mixedwood Plains. We also examined full sediment core for Lac des Chicots (Southern Québec), aiming disentangle impacts natural versus anthropogenic interactions assess their relative effects on lake’s biotic structure. Our ordination analysis suggests Plains experienced varying lake-specific over ~150 years, with two major trends across study lakes: (1) prevalent increase planktic (2) rise mesotrophic/eutrophic taxa receiving high human impacts. case identifies both historical events recent activities, cultural eutrophication warming. Overall, our demonstrates marked mainly associated

Climate Change and the Macroeconomic Structure in Pre-Industrial Europe: New Evidence from Wavelet Analysis

The relationship between climate change and the macroeconomy in pre-industrial Europe has attracted considerable attention in recent years. This study follows the combined paradigms of evolutionary economics and ecological economics, in which wavelet analysis (spectrum analysis and coherence analysis) is applied as the first attempt to examine the relationship between climate change and the mac...

Climate Change and Macro-Economic Cycles in Pre-Industrial Europe

Climate change has been proven to be the ultimate cause of social crisis in pre-industrial Europe at a large scale. However, detailed analyses on climate change and macro-economic cycles in the pre-industrial era remain lacking, especially within different temporal scales. Therefore, fine-grained, paleo-climate, and economic data were employed with statistical methods to quantitatively assess t...

Climate Change and Industrial Policy

This paper explores the implications of climate change for industrial policy (IP). Five implications are discussed, namely the need for international coordination of IPs; for putting human development, and not emission targets, as the overriding objective of low-carbon IP; of stimulating innovation for energy efficiency, energy diversification, and carbon capture and storage; and for aligning I...

Industrial Biotechnology and Climate Change

The OECD is a unique forum where governments work together to address the economic, social and environmental challenges of globalisation. The OECD is also at the forefront of efforts to understand and to help governments respond to new developments and concerns, such as corporate governance, the information economy and the challenges of an ageing population. The Organisation provides a setting ...

The dynamics of food chains under climate change and nutrient enrichment.

Warming has profound effects on biological rates such as metabolism, growth, feeding and death of organisms, eventually affecting their ability to survive. Using a nonlinear bioenergetic population-dynamic model that accounts for temperature and body-mass dependencies of biological rates, we analysed the individual and interactive effects of increasing temperature and nutrient enrichment on the...
